Terms of use

Last updated: 9 October 2026

The gist

We hope you love learning with ScalaLingua as much as we love building it. These terms describe our commitments to you, and your rights and responsibilities when you use ScalaLingua. Please read them, and get in touch if anything is unclear.

  • ScalaLingua is currently free to use. If we ever add paid features or adverts, we will tell you first.
  • Be kind: choose a respectful username and treat other learners fairly.
  • Younger learners need a parent or guardian's permission.
  • You can leave at any time and take your data with you.
  • Nothing in these terms takes away the rights you have as a consumer under the law of the country where you live.

1. Who's who

ScalaLingua is provided by , ("ScalaLingua", "we" or "us"); see our legal notice. "ScalaLingua" or "the service" means the ScalaLingua app on the web and on mobile devices, our sign-in service and this website. "You" means anyone who uses the service.

These terms, together with our privacy policy, are the agreement between you and us. By creating an account or using the service you accept them. If you do not agree, please do not use ScalaLingua.

2. Your account

You need an account to learn with ScalaLingua. Please give accurate information when you sign up, in particular your month and year of birth and your country, because we use them to apply the rules for younger learners. You need a valid email address so that we can verify it and contact you about your account.

Keep your password safe and do not share your account. You are responsible for what happens under your account unless it was used without your permission and you were not careless. Tell us straight away if you think someone else has used it. If we believe an account has been compromised, we may suspend it to protect you.

One account per person, please.

3. Age requirements

  • ScalaLingua is available to learners in the European Union and the European Economic Area.
  • You must be at least 8 years old.
  • If you are younger than the digital age of consent in your country (between 13 and 16), a parent or guardian must give permission before you can start learning. We email them a link; until they confirm, you can only see your account status. If they do not confirm within 14 days, the account is deleted.
  • Until you reach that age, your account has extra privacy protections, explained in our privacy policy.
  • If you are under 18, please make sure a parent or guardian has read these terms with you. By giving permission, a parent or guardian agrees to these terms on the learner's behalf.

4. The service

ScalaLingua is currently free to use and shows no adverts. We may introduce paid features or subscriptions, or show adverts, in the future. If we do:

  • we will tell you in advance, as described in section 9;
  • you will see the price, what you get and any additional terms before you are asked to pay, and you will keep your legal rights as a consumer, including any right to withdraw from a purchase;
  • we will update our privacy policy before showing adverts, ask for your consent where the law requires it, and never show adverts based on profiling to learners we know to be under 18.

We are always improving ScalaLingua, so features, courses and lessons may change, and we may add or retire them. We will not remove your progress without good reason, and if we retire a course we will give you notice where we reasonably can. Course material is written carefully, but it may occasionally contain mistakes; please tell us if you spot one.

We aim to keep ScalaLingua available at all times, but it may sometimes be interrupted, for example for maintenance.

5. Community rules

ScalaLingua is a friendly place for learners of all ages, including children. When you use it, please do not:

  • choose a username that is offensive, sexual, hateful, threatening, or that impersonates someone else or ScalaLingua;
  • harass, bully or spam other learners, or misuse friend requests, invite links or reports;
  • cheat, for example by using bots, scripts or other automated means to answer questions or gain XP;
  • scrape, copy or redistribute course material or other learners' information;
  • interfere with the service, try to get around its security, rate limits or restrictions, or access other people's accounts; or
  • use ScalaLingua for anything illegal.

Security researchers are welcome to report vulnerabilities to us responsibly through our contact form.

6. Moderation and reporting

The only things learners can make visible to others are their username, pseudonym and character. This section explains how we keep them appropriate, as required by the EU Digital Services Act.

How we moderate

  • Usernames and generated pseudonyms are checked automatically against a list of blocked words when they are chosen.
  • Any learner can report another learner's username or pseudonym from a leaderboard, friends list, friend request or search result.
  • If three different learners report the same username, it is automatically hidden (the pseudonym is shown instead) until our team reviews the reports.
  • A member of our team reviews every report and decides whether to take no action, require a new username, reset the pseudonym or, for serious or repeated breaches, ban the account. Learners who reported are told whether action was taken.

If we act on your account

We will tell you in the app what we did and why, unless the law prevents it. If you disagree, contact us within six months: a different member of our team will look at the decision again, free of charge, and tell you the outcome. You may also refer the dispute to a certified out-of-court dispute settlement body under Article 21 of the Digital Services Act, or go to court.

We act proportionately, with due regard to the rights of everyone involved. We may suspend, for a reasonable time and after a warning, the accounts of people who frequently break these rules, and stop handling reports from people who frequently make reports that are clearly unfounded.

Reporting illegal content

Anyone, including people without an account, can tell us about content on ScalaLingua that they believe is illegal, using our contact form or by email to [email protected]. Please include where the content appears (for example the username or pseudonym and which leaderboard), why you believe it is illegal and, unless you are reporting child sexual abuse material, your name and email address, and confirm that your report is accurate and complete to the best of your knowledge. We will confirm receipt, decide promptly and tell you what we decided.

7. Intellectual property

ScalaLingua, its course material, characters, artwork, sounds, software and name belong to us or our licensors. We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable right to use them through the service for your own, non-commercial learning. These terms do not give you any other rights to them, including the right to use our name or logo.

The username you choose and anything you write in a report remain yours. You let us store, display and process them as needed to run the service, and that permission ends when you delete them or your account.

If you believe something on ScalaLingua infringes your copyright or other rights, please tell us as described under Reporting illegal content.

8. Third-party services

You can choose to sign in with Google or Apple. If you do, their terms and privacy policies also apply to that sign-in. If you use the app from an app store, the store's terms apply to the download as well. Links to other websites are provided for convenience; we are not responsible for their content.

9. Changes

We may change these terms, for example to reflect changes to ScalaLingua or for legal, regulatory or security reasons. We will update the date at the top. If a change is significant, we will tell you in the app or by email at least 30 days before it takes effect, unless we have to make it sooner for legal or security reasons. If you do not agree, you can delete your account before the change takes effect; if you keep using ScalaLingua afterwards, the new terms apply.

10. Ending your use of ScalaLingua

You can stop using ScalaLingua and delete your account at any time from the app (Profile, Delete my account). You can download your data first (Profile, Export my data).

We may suspend or close your account if you seriously or repeatedly break these terms, if the law requires it, or to protect other learners or the service. Except where it would be unsafe or unlawful, we will tell you the reason and how to challenge the decision, as explained in section 6. If we ever decide to stop offering ScalaLingua altogether, we will give you at least 30 days' notice so that you can download your data.

11. Disclaimers

ScalaLingua is a learning tool. We do our best to make lessons accurate and the service reliable, but we cannot promise that it will always be error-free or uninterrupted, or that it will help you reach any particular level or pass any particular exam. This does not limit any rights you have by law that cannot be excluded.

12. Liability

Nothing in these terms limits or excludes our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, for wilful misconduct or gross negligence, for anything we have specifically promised you, or for anything else that cannot be limited or excluded by law.

Otherwise, our liability is limited to foreseeable damage caused by a breach of our essential obligations under these terms (the obligations that make the service possible and that you can normally rely on). We are not liable for minor negligence in breaching other duties, or for failures or delays caused by events beyond our reasonable control. These limits also apply to our employees and representatives.

13. Applicable law and disputes

These terms are governed by the law of Italy. If you are a consumer living in another EU or EEA country, you also keep the protection of the mandatory consumer laws of your country, and you can bring a claim in the courts of your country or of Italy.

If you have a complaint, please contact us first; most problems can be sorted out quickly. Information about consumer disputes is in our legal notice.

14. Miscellaneous

If any part of these terms is found to be invalid or unenforceable, the rest remains in effect. If we do not enforce a right straight away, we have not given it up. We may transfer this agreement to another company that takes over ScalaLingua, provided your rights are not reduced; we will tell you if this happens. You may not transfer your account or these terms to anyone else.

These terms are written in English. If we translate them and the versions differ, the English version applies, unless the law of your country says otherwise.
